Drifting is certainly one of the most spectacular forms of play with remote control cars. It's also definitely one that provides the most thrills. Controlled slides and smooth transitions between corners provide tremendous enjoyment. No wonder that many RC car enthusiasts look for models created specifically for drifting, not just "ordinary remote control toys". But how do you choose a car that's actually suitable for drifting? We answer step by step.

Controlled slides and smooth transitions between corners provide tremendous enjoyment. No wonder that many RC car enthusiasts look for models created specifically for drifting, not just "ordinary remote control toys". But how do you choose a car that's actually suitable for drifting? We answer step by step.

RC drift – what does it involve?

RC drift is a technique of driving a remote control car that involves deliberately putting it into a slide. It's most commonly performed on special tracks and smooth surfaces (e.g., on tiles or asphalt).

Unlike classic techniques, RC drifting isn't about maximum grip. What matters more is smooth driving, steering precision and proper vehicle balance. The key to getting an RC car into drift is controlling the rear axle and responding appropriately with the front wheels.

Currently, the world of RC cars increasingly focuses on realism. This trend also applies to drifting. Interest in this specific driving technique has led to the emergence of models with appropriate technical solutions – such as rear-wheel drive, gyroscopes or low-grip tires.

Best remote control car for drifting – what to look for?

First of all, you need to know that not every RC car is suitable for drifting. Models designed with this technique in mind have several key characteristics.

  1. Drive system

  • RWD (rear-wheel drive) – currently the standard in RC drifting, as it provides the most realistic car behavior.

  • 4x4 (AWD) – found in cheaper models and toys. Allows for entering slides, but provides less control and behaves less realistically

  1. Motor

  • Brushless motor – maintains high RPMs and offers smooth response and quiet operation. Allows for performing more advanced drifting – even on more grippy surfaces.

  • Brushed motor – is cheaper and simpler to maintain than a brushless motor, but it's completely sufficient when starting your RC drift adventure.

  1. Balance and weight

The weight and construction of the remote control model greatly affects the enjoyment of dynamic driving. A poorly balanced car will either constantly fall into uncontrolled spins or "straighten out" in corners.

Drifting is facilitated by:

  • proper weight distribution of the car,

  • slight front weight bias (better steering control),

  • stable rear with lower grip.

For drifting, hard tires with low grip are usually used (made of plastic or very hard rubber), which make it easier to maintain a slide.

What RC drift car for children and beginners?

For people starting their drift adventure (especially children) RTR (Ready To Run) models are recommended, meaning those that are ready to drive straight out of the box. At the start, it's not worth overpaying, so it's best to choose an RC car with a brushed motor, which offers a good price-to-performance ratio. A reasonable choice for beginners will also be 4x4 drive, which is easier to master than RWD.

Generally, the key to good fun at the beginning is price, build quality and lack of complicated configuration. Only when you really get into the subject is it worth moving on to modifications, tuning and more advanced track solutions.

Are all remote control vehicles suitable for drifting?

Not all remote control vehicles are suitable for drifting, even if they're fast and look impressive. Off-road RC cars or models with high suspension don't allow for controlled sliding. For drifting, you need remote control cars designed for driving on smooth surfaces with low construction.

Should a remote control drift car have 4x4 drive?
